چکیده

Clark and Scarf [1960] characterize optimal policies in a two-echelon, twolocation inventory model. We extend their result to the infinite-horizon case (for both discounted and average costs). The computations required are far easier than for the finite horizon problem. Further simplification is achieved for normal demands. We also consider the more interesting case of multiple locations at the lower echelon. We show that, under certain conditions, this problem can be closely approximated by a model with one such location. A rather simple computation thus yields both a near-optimal policy and a good approximation of the cost of the system.

Warehouse-Retailer Network Design Problem

In this paper, we study the distribution network design problem integrating transportation and infinite horizon multiechelon inventory cost function. We consider the trade-off between inventory cost, direct shipment cost, and facility location cost in such a system. The problem is to determine how many warehouses to set up, where to locate them, how to serve the retailers using these warehouses...

Optimal Policies for a Capacitated Two-Echelon Inventory System

This paper demonstrates optimal policies for capacitated serial multiechelon production/inventory systems. Extending the Clark and Scarf (1960) model to include installations with production capacity limits, we demonstrate that a modified echelon base-stock policy is optimal in a two-stage system when there is a smaller capacity at the downstream facility. This is shown by decomposing the dynam...

Optimal Replenishment Policies for Multiechelon Inventory Problems Under Advance Demand Information

Customers and downstream supply chain partners often place, or can be induced to place, orders in advance of future requirements. We show how to optimally incorporate advance demand information into periodic-review, multiechelon, inventory systems in series. While the state space for series systems appears to be formidably large, we decompose the problem across locations, as in Clark and Scarf ...

A Single-Unit Decomposition Approach to Multiechelon Inventory Systems

We show the optimality of state-dependent echelon base-stock policies in uncapacitated serial inventory systems with Markov-modulated demand and Markov-modulated stochastic lead times in the absence of order crossing. Our results cover finite-time horizon problems as well as infinite-time horizon formulations, with either a discounted or an average cost criterion. We employ a novel approach, ba...

A Multiechelon Repairable Item Inventory System with Lateral Transshipment and a General Repair Time Distribution

This paper discusses the determination of the spare inventory level for a multiechelon repairable item inventory system, which has several bases and a central depot with emergency lateral transshipment capability. Previous research is extended by removing a restrictive assumption on the repair time distribution. A mathematical model that allows a general repair time distribution, as well as an ...
